Vivo V19 review: High on camera and design

Reliable battery life

Vivo has been innovative with its V-series smartphones, especially when it comes to the camera or let’s say cameras. And it's no different with the company's latest V-series phone -- Vivo V19. The smartphone succeeds Vivo V17 that launched last year. Like V17, V19 too is touted to be camera-centric with features that will impress users. The smartphone comes in two variants -- 8GB + 12GB and 8GB + 256GB, priced at Rs 27,990 and Rs 31,990 respectively. Vivo V19 comes in two colour options -- Mystic Silver and Piano Black.

How good is the all-new Vivo's V-series phone in terms of performance, design, display, battery and its key highlight -- camera. Find out in our in-depth review of Vivo V19.

Vivo V19: Design and display
Vivo V19 is a premium mid-range smartphone from the company and it does reflect in its build quality, design and overall appeal. The smartphone features a modern design. At the back it follows quad camera set-up, similar to most phones of 2020. There’s the new rectangular camera bump with four lenses stacked in L-shape and 3D glass curved back with gradient design. Vivo has kept the overall design simple and minimalistic and it oozes premium look and feel. The curved back panel makes the smartphone less slippery and comfortable to hold.
The smartphone comes with Corning Gorilla Glass 6 protection in both front and back. There's also plastic back cover in the box.

All the buttons are placed at the right side of the smartphone, while the left side just has the SIM card slot which features a dedicated microSD card slot as well. Apart from this, the USB Type-C charging port, speaker, 3.5mm headphone jack and primary microphone are placed at the bottom.
Moving to the display, the smartphone boasts of a 6.44-inch full HD+ Super AMOLED display with dual punch-hole housing for selfie cameras at the top right corner of the screen. Bezels on this smartphone are thin and almost symmetrical across all the sides, including the chin which further adds to the overall appeal of the phone. The display quality on this smartphone is good; it offers deep blacks and produces vibrant and punchy colours. The display is bright and viewing angles are good too. We never faced any issue while viewing the screen content under direct sunlight.
Vivo V19: Performance
Vivo V19 is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 712 processor and is paired with 8GB of RAM, which is a decent set of specifications. We have seen Qualcomm Snapdragon 712 in action in several Z-series smartphones from the company and we know that it’s not a bad processor by any means. Yes, the processor powers several sub Rs 20,000 smartphones. For gamers, there's the Adreno 616 GPU -- again not the most-powerful in its segment.

But then, Vivo V-series phones have never been hardware powerhouses. Most of them offer smooth performance and exceptional word remains for camera.
Coming back to the Vivo V19's performance, we installed almost around 140 apps and games in our testing unit. This included some power and resource-hungry apps such as Adobe Lightroom, Adobe Rush, PUBG Mobile, COD Mobile, etc. We did not notice any lag or delay while opening the apps or navigating through menus or even switching between apps.

Games on the smartphone run well at medium to high setting depending upon the game you are playing. However, the loading time was a little high compared to the other smartphones that run on newer processors.

Talking about the operating system, the Vivo V19 runs the latest Android 10 operating system with a layer of FunTouch OS on the top. FunTouch OS has come a long way since its inception and we have to agree that Vivo has done a good job of making it look more polished with every release.

The FunTouch OS is among one-of-the oldest and feature-rich custom Android skin that maintains a good balance between design, feature and functionality. However, it still comes with tons of bloatware that takes away the ‘premium’ tag from the smartphone.

In-display fingerprint scanner and face unlock works fine, they are both fast and reliable. The audio quality on this smartphone is decent as well. The sound is clear and crisp. But, we wished that Vivo could have opted for dual speakers set up just like other premium smartphones today.

Vivo V19: Camera
As mentioned above too, Camera has always been a strong point for Vivo V-series smartphones and Vivo V19 is no different. Vivo claims camera to be the key feature of the smartphone deliver big on this.

The company, for some reason, has tried to stick with the 48MP quad-camera setup, which somehow has become outdated compared to the 64MP sensors other smartphones at this price range or even at a cheaper price range are offering. However, we have to agree that having a big and better sensor does not always result in better output.

But before diving into the camera quality and features it offers, let’s take a quick look at the camera specifications of Vivo V19. The smartphone comes with a quad-rear camera setup that consists of a 48MP primary shooter with f/1.79 aperture, an 8-megapixel wide-angle camera with f/2.2 aperture, and two 2-megapixel cameras with f/2.4 aperture for macro and bokeh shots. Along with this, it also comes with dual front-facing camera setup of 32MP and 8MP sensors with an aperture size of f/2.08 + f/2.28, respectively.

Vivo V19 comes with a range of shooting modes. These include ultra-stable video, super macro, super night mode, bokeh portrait, art portrait video and more. Along with these, there’s this new selfie flash feature called Aura Screen Light for taking better low-light selfies. It also lets users check the live preview while shooting.

One might complain that at this price, Vivo should have given 64MP primary sensor and we had the same thought until we started shooting photos. With every Vivo V-series smartphone, the company seems to have further improved its camera quality. This time around, we also liked the new image-processing technique Vivo is using with V19. Not only the smartphone captures some stunning photos with the right amount of details, saturation and balanced colours, but the image processing does also over sharpen things to make it look unnatural. Although, it is not entirely gone, but that’s a step in the right direction. The primary sensor of Vivo V19 captures good looking photos in both daylight as well as low-light conditions, thanks to the dedicated Night mode.

The 8MP wide-angle camera also follows the footprints of the primary sensor and does a decent job as well. Images turned out to be good and detailed. However, some images taken using this sensor tend to lose details at the corners of the photos. Basically, the edges in these photos are not as sharp as other parts.

There's a dedicated macro lens, similar to Vivo V17. And as in Vivo V17, it captures stunning close-up shots with a good amount of detail and sharpness. The images captured by macro lenses retain their natural colour tone and we faced no issue while focusing as well. But, as already mentioned, it’s a 2MP sensor which means cropping the image while post processing is out of question.

Two other important features of the smartphone's camera are: Super Night Selfie and the Aura Screen Light. The Super Night Selfie mode takes some good looking low-light selfie shots while maintaining the right balance between details and skin tone. While the Aura Screen Light is Vivo’s version of screen flash. The Aura Screen Light allows users to see the live preview before taking the shot. Aura Screen Light heps fill in proper light inside a low-light selfie shot and also enhances the skin tone by a margin to produce some good looking night selfies.

Vivo V19 can shoot up to 4K 60fps videos and it also comes with Optical image stabilisation and a dedicated Ultra-stable video mode to shake-free videos. Video quality on this smartphone is good and offers good detail and sharpness.

The OIS does a good job of keeping the frames shake free and stable. The only issue is that it does not work with 4K videos and that’s a bummer considering Vivo is pitching it as a camera champion smartphone.

Vivo V19: Battery
The smartphone comes with a 4500mAh battery that supports 33W FlashCharge 2.0 and it offers good battery backup. During our test, the smartphone managed to last for a day, with around 30% battery left. On a single charge, the smartphone easily manages to last for a day and half on normal usages. The 33W charger that comes with the phone charges the smartphone up to 70% in less than 30 minutes.

Vivo V19: Verdict
Vivo V19 checks most boxes right for features and specs that a 2020 smartphone should have. It looks premium, comes with a good and bright display, is backed by a big 4500mAh battery and packs a powerful camera setup that delivers stunning photos in both daylight as well as lowlight conditions. But, processor does remain an issue if one looks at price-to-specs ratio.

But, for someone who’s looking for an overall package with exceptional camera and smooth performance, Vivo V19 is definitely a good choice.
